Senior/U20 Event Report 14th July 2025

The temperatures have been scorching lately, but not as red hot as our athletes! It has been
another busy couple of weeks across the board, with some really exciting results being
recorded including a COMMONWEALTH QUALIFYING STANDARD!!!!

We start this week at the BMC Gold Standard Meet at Watford on the 25 th of June, where
Jamie Phillips was 3 rd in the men’s A race 800m with 1:46.92 – definitely a warning shot as
you will see further through this report…

Friday the 27 th saw the return of 3k on The Green over the new course, and Mark Alexander
finished in 7 th overall in 10:09. The Friday evening saw 3 Kilmarnock athletes travel through
to Livingston for their Open Graded competition. Matthew Monachello was 4 th in the 1500m
with a shiny new PB of 4:07.69 – great running Matthew! Matthew was closely followed by
fellow U20 athlete Jamie Work who posted a SB of 4:10.45 for 6 th . Meanwhile Isla Raeburn
was 2 nd in her 400m in a SB of 63.31. Also on the evening of the 27 th , we had some hardy
athletes taking on the heat and the bugs at the Calderglen Trail Festival. In the 10k, Greig
Glendinning was 23 rd overall and 3 rd V50 in 46:39. Meanwhile in the 5k race, Eilidh
Ballantyne was 12 overall and 2 nd senior female in 24:00, and sister Mhairi finished 32 nd
overall and 3 rd U20 in 28:47 – well done all!

Back in action on Wednesday the 2 nd of July, Jamie Phillips was competing at the Boysen
Memorial Meet in Oslo where he was 4 th in the 800m in 1:47.7.

Moving onto the 5 th of July, our Masters squad were out in force at the 4JStudios Scottish
Athletics Masters Championships at the Riverside stadium at Ayr. In the sprints, Douglas
Dickson was 6 th V55 in the 100m with 13.74s, and then 4 th in the 200m with 28.52s. Alistair
Craig was 4 th V40 in the 100m in 12.98s and 4 th in the 200 with a new PB of 26.97. In the
400m, Jennifer Beattie took V40 gold in 67.97 and also 800m gold in 2:32.61. In the men’s
800m, Robert McHarg took V60 gold in 2:14.79 and then claimed 1500 gold in fine style in
4:33.81 – great running in challenging conditions! However it was not just the track athletes
picking up medals, there were some great successes in the field also, with the biggest
amount of bling claimed by Alex McIntosh who claimed gold in no less than 4 separate
events (hammer 30.73m, javelin 23.74m, discus 25.91m and shot 7.90m) – huge well done
Alex, great achievement! Kirsty Donovan claimed her first Masters gold as a Kilmarnock
Harrier in the V40 discus (26.4m) and in the horizontal jumps Alistair Craig picked up a silver
in the triple jump (8.83m) and bronze in the long jump (4.81m). The venue was also hosting
the 4J Studios Scottish Athletics Combined Events Championship, and our senior ladies had
a fabulous weekend in their first season as seniors with Brooke Dunlop taking the gold with
4341 points and Isla Raeburn (representing her uni on this occasion) claimed silver with
4154 points – huge well done ladies!

Also on the 5 th , Logan Mitchell was in Derby with the Glasgow Jaguars team in the NAL
Premiership match where he gained valuable points in the hammer throw with a 47.70m
which I am lead to believe is a Jags record? Well done to Logan and his coaching team for
another great performance on the national stage.

Another athlete who has consistently been representing at top level events both at home and
abroad is Jamie Phillips. Having come back from uni in America for the summer holidays,
he has been quick to get back into the blue and white vest and has been knocking at the
door for something pretty special for a while now! On the 9 th of July at the Cork City Sports
Meet, the hard work and dedication paid off, with Jamie running 1:46.64 for 6 th place in the
800m, which is within the standards set for Commonwealth selection – huge congratulations
to Jamie and his coaching team, what an achievement!

Not keen to let his brother have all of the accolades this week, Jordan Phillips was also in
action on the 12 th at the BMC Watford GP meeting where he finished 3 rd in a fabulous PB of
1:49.99 – it is great to see the depth of talent we have at our wee club.

Rounding up an amazing couple of weeks of racing, another athlete who is familiar with
international racing was out on the medal hunt at the Crieff 10k (incorporating the Scottish
Athletics Mid Trail Champs). Our very own Jonathon Downey completed the course in very
challenging conditions in 35:16, taking the Scottish U20 silver medal for his troubles.
Once again there are no changes to the league tables, but things are about to start hotting
up in the coming weeks with races starting back up! We are also still looking for athletes for
the SNAL on the 27 th (see Kevin Mitchell) and will shortly be taking names for the final
CSSAL League match on the 10 th of August. If we have missed anyone off this report please
let us know – we love to report good news!
